I’ve been playing roleplaying games for years, since I was about 11 and first discovered the wonderful wide world of the internet. What I’ve learned is that, just like in romance, it can be hard to find the right partner.
Mixed chemistry can manifest in many ways, whether it’s a person focusing too much on the numbers versus the fun, or someone more worried about winning than collaborating with their comrades.
Different play styles are common, and it’s important to emphasize that there are no wrong ways to enjoy playing a game.
Playing these games can reveal your own deep fundamental values that you will not cross, not even for the sake of character development. If you’re playing with the wrong teammates, this can result in disastrous gameplay.

Author’s note: I did not look nearly this sweet when playing with my friends on the internet, I was much more chaotic, ten times more socially awkward, and sweaty. So very sweaty.
What I enjoy about playing these games is the multi-faceted storytelling and collaboration. It always feels like a little zap in my chest when I feel the excitement of a good story while playing with friends.
Being not just the listener but the co-creator is a gift. I love the shared vulnerability, the collective goofiness, and the sheer fun of it all. Having a group you feel safe with, to try something silly or even daring, is a gift.
All this to say, I’ve really enjoyed what we’ve been creating this season. Maybe in my old roleplaying age, I’ve become a sappy friend to top it all off. I’m grateful to those with whom I’ve found that spark in the past, and more so, I’m grateful to the Lovelycraftians.
